Our FAQs

What are the aims of the MOE Kindergarten curriculum?

The MK curriculum aims to nurture children holistically so that they are confident, demonstrate strong social skills and have a good foundation in literacy and numeracy. It is based on MOE's belief that children are curious, active and competent learners, and guided by the principles in the NEL Framework.

Will children be given spelling lists?

Children will have opportunities to learn the names and sounds of letters in the context of stories, rhymes and songs through the Starlight Literacy (EL) Programme. MKs do not give children EL and MTL spelling lists to memorise for spelling tests. At the MK, language acquisition is nurtured through the Starlight Literacy Programme, which is designed to encourage the children to learn to read and write words in context so that they understand the meaning of the words and are able to use them in communicating with others.

How will the MKs develop foundational numeracy skills in children?

Children are provided with opportunities to learn and apply age-appropriate numeracy concepts and skills through intentionally planned learning activities, routines and play. For example, as children learn numeracy concepts and skills such as pairing, they apply their understanding during daily routines such as snack time when they pair a cup with a plate.

What are the aims of the MTL curriculum?

MK offers classes in the 3 official MTLs: Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
The MTL curriculum is focused on 3 main aims:
1) To develop the children's interest in learning MTL
- Children enjoy and actively participate in activities
2) To develop the children's foundational language and literacy skills
- Listen with understanding
- Speak to convey meaning
- Recognise words and read with assistance
- Make marks, draw symbols and write letters/characters to represent ideas
3) For children to be aware of the local ethnic culture
- Be aware of customs and traditions
- Interact with friends, family and community

How will MK ensure that my child is ready for primary school?

The curriculum in the MKs is developed by MOE’s curriculum specialists and trained educators with knowledge and experience in early childhood education and who are familiar with the primary school curriculum. The MK curriculum is designed to nurture children holistically so that they are confident, have strong social skills and have foundational literacy and numeracy skills. The MK curriculum will prepare children well by laying a strong foundation for their future learning in primary school.

How will the children's progress be shared with parents?

At the MKs, the monitoring of our children's progress is not through pencil and paper tests. Our teachers focus on observing the children and their learning experiences throughout the year to gain insights on their learning and development. The teachers share the children's progress with parents formally through termly learning portfolios and biannual parent-teacher conferences, and informally during daily conversations with parents.

Will MK children be given priority admission to primary school?

Kindergarten children applying for admission to the respective primary school will be eligible under Phase 2A of the Primary 1 registration exercise.
